BreastStroke: It’s a ‘whip kick’ not a ‘frog kick’
Learn the Whip Kick
In trying to find people with a decent kick in Breaststroke, well, it’s tricky.
Not that many.
There are a couple in this video. Me and one other.
I’m not working with school swim team kids here.
Mostly people working on their own to improve.
They watch videos and other swimmers. First problem normally to fix with breaststroke is the co-ordination.
That is the easier one to fix. Proper Kick
Most swimmers are doing more what it called a ‘frog’ kick.
They put their legs out too wide and then, when straightened out, bring them together.
At the beginning, these swimmers are drawing their legs up with knees wider than feet.
Should be the opposite, feet wider and toes pointed outward. When one is pushing the water back (not sideways), the inside of the ankles and lower leg are used.
You should feel the pressure of the water on your inner side of the ankle.
Mostly pushing back and bringing them together.
Some coaches will use some sort of tie to keep the knees closer together to train swimmers, to help them keep feet and ankles wider.
It’s tricky and often the swimmer needs some extra stretching over time to get the ankles flexible enough.
